When Will the Mindset Change Arrive? Processes That Harness Innovation to Make Construction More Efficient

Key Challenges in the Construction Industry

Construction companies face significant challenges: rising labor costs, stricter regulations, and increasing administrative burdens, alongside growing expectations to maintain efficiency and competitiveness. Organizational development, innovation, and the use of new methodologies may be the key elements that give fresh momentum to the sector. The application of IPD (Integrated Product Development) and the LEAN approach—following processes outlined by both international and Hungarian leaders—can transform corporate operations, optimize construction workflows, and eliminate outdated practices.

At the CONTECH Conference, organized by Infotér, a keynote by Dr. Nina Rodde (Lumico GmbH) introduced the advantages of integrated project delivery, particularly the role of construction simulations in boosting efficiency. Ahead of the roundtable on mindset change, experts including Dr. Gergely Paulinyi (Paulinyi and Partners), Sándor Benkei (Óbuda Group), Zoltán Kalmár (ProptechZoom), and Viktória Nyerges (Contech Consulting) discussed why mindset change is indispensable in construction, and how new technologies and methodologies can be integrated into the operations of Hungarian companies.

Why Is Mindset Change Necessary in Construction?

Based on a PESTEL analysis, political, economic, technological, and environmental factors have a strong impact on construction. These shifting external influences—from global market dynamics to state regulations—demand new strategies that can adapt effectively to challenges. According to Gergely Paulinyi and Viktória Nyerges, the sector can only succeed if companies recognize the need for innovation and replace outdated leadership structures with modern, more agile approaches.

The Role of Innovation in Construction

According to Zoltán Kalmár, innovation affects every aspect of corporate operations in construction. Strategy, culture, and resources—whether human resources, tools, or processes—can all be transformed to create more efficient and better-functioning systems. As the first step in innovation, companies must assess their own maturity, identify their problems, and define the opportunities that can form the foundation for change.

How to Build an Innovative Organization

During the discussion, Gergely Paulinyi emphasized that leadership commitment and a review of mindset are indispensable for introducing innovation. Sándor Benkei illustrated, through concrete examples of integrated project management and the LEAN approach, how corporate operations can be reshaped. The goal of LEAN is to optimize every process within the company, minimizing waste while increasing productivity.
